Hydration isn't just about water—it's also about electrolytes, which your body relies on for fluid balance, nerve signaling, and muscle function.
Alcohol suppresses vasopressin, the hormone that tells your kidneys to hold onto water, so you urinate more and can lose electrolytes like sodium and potassium along with it—especially with heavier drinking or vomiting (Penning et al., 2010). That's part of why drinking leaves you dehydrated: dry mouth, dizziness, fatigue, and all.
Does that mean electrolytes cure a hangover? Not exactly! hangovers are complicated, and research hasn't tied dehydration markers tightly to hangover severity (Penning et al., 2010; Mackus et al., 2024). Inflammation, sleep disruption, and alcohol metabolites matter too.
But dehydration itself is real and worth fixing either way. Even mild fluid loss can dull concentration, alertness, memory, and mood (Dube et al., 2022; Riebl & Davy, 2013), and water alone doesn't replace the minerals you actually lost, electrolytes do.
